MFA setup using authenticator app
Multi-factor authentication is when a user must provide two or more pieces of evidence to verify their identity to gain access to an app or digital resource. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is used to protect against unauthorised use of an account by ensuring that digital users are who they say they are. SIT’s implementation of MFA is to use a password, while also needing to respond to an authentication request by using an app. The Microsoft Authenticator App is the fastest way to approve a 2FA request. Note the Authenticator App can be installed on multiple phones.
1. Install Microsoft Authenticator from Play/App store on your mobile device. Please check the icon as shown below for the app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azure.authenticator
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-authenticator/id983156458
2. On your computer sign-in to https://aka.ms/MFAsetup
NOTE: You may get a screen that asks for Notifications to be sent – please select ALLOW
3. After you type your username and password on the computer click next until you reach the QR code screen as shown below.
Note: If you see the screen as below, click Add sign-in method and then choose the Authenticator app as the method.
4. On the phone select the add account option (plus button top right) and then select Work or school account.
5. Once the QR code is scanned it will ask you to enter a code on your phone to confirm the setup.
6. Once you confirm the code you will get the following two screens confirming your MFA setup.
Note: Some users have reported that they see their account in the authenticator app after the process times out halfway i.e. they do not proceed to step 5.
If this happens to you please remove the account from the app and start from step 2 again.
